However, not only did this polish last through enough of pond, dish-washing and package-opening; it also maintained the glossy smoothen that ordinarily wears away after a day or two. On day nine, the only noticeable habiliment was a bit of lifting right at the border of the nail.

OPI

OPI Pale to the Chief, $half-dozen.seventy, available hither: This neutral shade from OPI'south Kerry Washington collection (new for fall) chipped later a week — it was a tiny, heartbreaking bit on the very tip of my pointer fingernail (probably caused by frantic typing). Luckily, information technology was too the kind of scrap that can be hands patched with a tiny dot of smooth, which I would have done if not for this experiment. Oddly enough, the chipping didn't get any worse afterwards that. Normally I'd wait the whole smash to start flaking off, but the rest of the polish stayed put, making the fleck barely noticeable.

Chanel

Chanel in Canotier, $28, available here:Chanel has a flake of a reputation within the nail junkie customs for not being very long-lasting. Just, come on, it's Chanel. I used a metal shade, which was still going strong on 24-hour interval six. Then everything unraveled: chips appeared in 3 spots all at one time. But something this formula has going for it is that the shade didn't fade at all; the gold was still as metal and gleam-y as it had been on mean solar day ane — well, what was left of it was, anyhow.

Zoya

Zoya in Emerge, $ten, bachelor here: Zoya's formula is five-gratuitous, meaning it doesn't incorporate some of the chemicals used in other brands. That's bang-up, but it also ways the polishes can be a piddling temperamental when it comes to truly lasting. I painted this one on my middle finger, and it was the commencement to recede from the edges a scrap, which I suspect is due to the fact that it'southward my longest finger and is subject to the most contact day-to-day. Otherwise, it made it to twenty-four hour period nine sans chips, just it lifted only a bit at the cuticle.

Essie

Essie in Cocktails & Coconuts, $8.fifty, available here:This was the first in the bunch to chip. I painted it on my ring finger, and wound up with a small-scale chip at the tip simply iv days in. By day eight, there were multiple chips around the edges of the finger. Not ideal.

Butter London

Butter London blast polish in Toff, $15, bachelor hither: This was definitely the darkest shade that I chose of the entire bunch, but it's such a Butter London classic that I ever tend to gravitate toward it. It started receding at the tip four days in, and so got a tiny scrap just at the tip six days in. But by day nine, it hadn't gotten whatsoever worse than that – and the sheen of that night, rose shade was still in that location.

The winner:

Nails Inc was the true champion hither, having survived the entire examination chip-free, with Sally Hansen and Smith & Cult close behind. The moral of the story, if you lot want a long-lasting manicure? Use a good base of operations- and topcoat, paint on super-sparse layers and always be sure to let each coat dry thoroughly. And don't always assume that the most expensive nail shine is one i with the most staying power.
